Medical Therapy
For veterinarians managing dogs with GOLPP, a comprehensive approach to medication is essential.
During the upper airway exam, pre-op anti-emetics like Maropitant (1 mg/kg IV/IM) and Ondansetron (0.5 mg/kg IV) can be used for better swallowing function. Pre-op proton pump inhibitors such as Pantoprazole (1.0 mg/kg IV) or Omeprazole (0.5-1 mg/kg PO) are recommended to increase gastric pH and decrease mucosal damage risk. Sedation can be achieved with Butorphanol (0.2-0.3 mg/kg IV/IM) and Acepromazine (0.01-0.03 mg/kg IV/IM), with Oxygenation provided for at least 3 minutes prior to induction.

For post-operative and maintenance care, drugs like Cisapride (0.5 mg/kg PO q 8 hours) and Sildenafil (1 mg/kg PO q 12 hours) are suggested to improve esophageal function. Antacids such as Omeprazole (1 mg/kg PO q 12 hours) and Famotidine (0.5-1 mg/kg PO q 12) help manage acid reflux. For anxiety management, options include Trazadone (5-7.5 mg/kg PO PRN), Alprazolam (0.02-0.05 mg/kg PO q 6-12 hours), and natural supplements like Zylkene or dog-appeasing pheromones.
